Why the distance changes the job
Portugal is the longest regular run we make, and being honest about that is more useful than being reassuring. From Greater Manchester, a delivery in Faro means crossing England, France and Spain before you reach the border. Driver hours are regulated, rest is mandatory, and a vehicle committed to that corridor is committed for a serious stretch.
The consequence is consolidation. Portuguese loads travel when there is a vehicle planned for the route, with several moves aboard heading the same way. That is what keeps it affordable. It also means the schedule follows the corridor plan, and your written quote sets out the expected window rather than a date we cannot guarantee.

Portugal splits cleanly into easy and hard, and it is not always where people expect.
The Algarve coastal developments are the easy end — modern, laid out for vehicles, with room to work. Inland Algarve is not: village lanes, unsurfaced tracks up to smallholdings, and gradients that get considerably worse after rain.
Lisbon is the genuine challenge. The city is built on hills, the historic streets are cobbled and steep, the buildings are tall and the staircases are narrow and winding, and a great many have no lift at all. There are deliveries in Alfama and Graça where the practical answer is an external furniture lift to a balcony. That is not an upsell — it is occasionally the only way a sofa gets into a flat.
Paperwork
The transit documentation follows the same pattern as our other routes: a full inventory, evidence that you are moving your residence, identification, and the relief on used household effects claimed properly.
The Portuguese addition is the NIF, and the certificado de bagagem — documentation of the household goods accompanying your change of residence. We prepare what is ours to prepare; the NIF is worth arranging before you go, since almost nothing else in Portugal moves without it.

Lisbon and the Setúbal peninsula
Hillside streets, buildings with no lift, and the steepest delivery access in the country. Cascais and Estoril are gentler.

Porto and the north
City apartments and the Douro valley. A longer run but a straightforward one on the A1.

Moving to Portugal — your questions
How does the route to Portugal work?
Down through England to Kent, across the Channel, through France on the western autoroutes, into Spain at Irún, then across northern Spain on the AP-1 and A-62 and south into Portugal — or down the Spanish west side towards the Algarve. It is the longest run we do on a regular basis.
Do I need an NIF before I move?
A número de identificação fiscal is required for almost everything official in Portugal — property, utilities, bank accounts. It is not needed for the removal itself, but arrange one early, because without it the practical side of arriving stalls badly.
Can you get a lorry to an Algarve villa?
Usually yes on the coastal developments, which are laid out for vehicles. Inland is different — village lanes, unsurfaced tracks and gradients that a loaded vehicle should not attempt in the dry, let alone after rain. Where that is the case we shuttle from the nearest firm surface.
What about Lisbon hill properties?
Lisbon is the hardest delivery city on our European routes. Cobbled gradients, tram lines, buildings with narrow winding staircases and no lift. Some deliveries genuinely need an external furniture lift to the balcony. We establish that at survey and price it honestly rather than discovering it with a wardrobe halfway up.
Is Portugal quoted differently from Spain?
Yes, because it is further and consolidates less frequently. A load to Faro travels past most of Spain to get there. That extra distance and the thinner corridor traffic are reflected in how the job is planned and scheduled.
Can my belongings be stored while my Portuguese purchase completes?
Yes, and it is common — Portuguese conveyancing does not always align with a UK sale. Your things go into containerised storage in Greater Manchester and travel once you have the keys and an address for the paperwork.
